Localization and snaking in axially compressed and internally pressurized thin cylindrical shells

چکیده

Abstract This paper uncovers new manifestations of the homoclinic snaking mechanism in post-buckling regime a pressurized thin cylindrical shell under axial load. These forms tend to propagate either wholly or partially direction that is orthogonal applied load and so, unlike earlier Woods & Champneys (1999, Heteroclinic tangles unfolding degenerate Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation. Phys. D, 129, 147–170), are fundamentally 2D nature. The main effect internal pressurization on firstly transition circumferential multiplication buckles from one-tier pattern three-tier pattern. Secondly, can induce oblique snaking, whereby sequential occurs helical across cylinder domain. For low levels pressure, single dimple remains—as unpressurized case—the unstable edge state smallest energy barrier around stable pre-buckling equilibrium. greater changes surrounded by four smaller dimples. By tracing limit point denotes onset these states parameter space pressure load, we justify validate empirically derived design guideline for buckling cylinders proposed Fung Sechler (1957, Buckling thin-walled circular compression pressure. J. Aeronaut. Sci., 24, 351–356).

Imperfection-Insensitive Axially Loaded Thin Cylindrical Shells

The high efficiency of circular monocoque cylindrical shells in carrying axial loads is impaired by their extreme sensitivity to imperfections and there is an extensive body of literature that addresses this behavior. Instead of following this classical path, focused on circular cross-sections, this paper presents a novel approach that adopts optimal symmetry-breaking wavy cross-sections (wavy ...

Buckling of axially compressed thin cylindrical shells with functionally graded middle layer

Buckling of a simply supported three-layer circular cylindrical shell under axial compressive load is studied. The inner and outer layers of the shell are comprised of the same homogeneous and isotropic material, and the middle layer is made of an isotropic functionally graded (FG) material whose Young’s modulus varies either affinely or parabolically in the thickness direction from its value f...

Imperfection-Insensitive Axially Loaded Cylindrical Shells

The high efficiency of monocoque cylindrical shells in carrying axial loads is curtailed by their extreme sensitivity to imperfections. For practical applications, this issue has been alleviated by introducing closely stiffened shells which, however, require expensive manufacturing. Here we present an alternative approach that provides a fundamentally different solution. We design symmetry-brea...

Computation of Localized Post Buckling in Long Axially-Compressed Cylindrical Shells

Buckling is investigated of a long thin cylindrical shell under longitudinal compression as modelled by the von KK armm an{Donnell equations. Evidence is reviewed for the buckling being localised to some portion of the axial length. In accordance with this observed behaviour the equations are rst approximated circumferentially by a Galerkin procedure, whereupon cross-symmetric homoclinic soluti...
